Having worked in the teaching profession for 16 years, Dawn is currently the Headteacher at Shaw Primary Academy in South Ockendon, which is a two form entry Primary and Nursery school. Dawn undertakes the voluntary role of Thurrock Branch Secretary and the Eastern Region Immediate Past President for the NAHT. Working in collaboration with other schools is something that is very important to Dawn and as a result, she is the Chair of a group of local schools who meet regularly to share good practice, ideas and resources. In addition to this she is a strategic member of the Dilkes Primary Teaching School Alliance where she has supported other school leaders as a facilitator for the NPQSL and has delivered training and development to student teachers undertaking the Post Graduate Certificate of Education.
Dawn’s real area of interest is assessment and effectively involving pupils in the process. It was this interest, and a determination to make the time teachers spent marking more productive, that led to the development of the alternative approach to marking and feedback at Shaw in September 2013. After a year of trialling the system and developing the practice, evaluations revealed not only a reduction in the workload of teachers but many other ‘accidentally brilliant’ outcomes. These include, an improvement in daily assessment, a greater responsibility of children in terms of thoroughly checking their own work and high quality dialogue and feedback through guided learning groups.
