Speaker Announcement: Lord Nash

The Academies Show London 2017 is delighted to announce that Lord Nash, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the School System, will be speaking at the show in the main conference theatre.

Lord Nash worked in venture capital for 30 years, before deciding to work in education, and was a non-executive board member at the Department for Education for over 2 years before being appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Schools in January 2013.

In 2006 he set up Future, a charity designed to support young people by working with other small charities and sponsoring academies, including Pimlico Academy and Millbank Primary Academy.

The Minister’s responsibilities include:

  • A strong school system (including free schools, academies, multi-academy trusts, university technical colleges, studio schools, faith schools, independent schools, home education, supplementary schools)
  • School governance and underperformance
  • Admissions
  • School capital investment (including new school places, school maintenance, land, and playing fields)
  • Tackling extremism in schools

Lord Nash’s session will take place in the main conference theatre at 09:55 – 10:10, and will cover the following:

The Minister’s address will reflect the following priorities:

  • Timetable for the National Funding Formula implementation
  • Social mobility and tackling under-performance
  • Independent schools and their role in working with the state funded sector
  • The future of academies
  • Promoting educational excellence through ‘opportunity areas’
